What causes gums to recede?
Gum recession develops gradually, so many people only notice once their teeth start to look longer or feel more sensitive. Common contributing factors include:
- Periodontal (gum) disease
- Aggressive or incorrect brushing technique
- Genetic susceptibility to thin gum tissue
- Plaque and tartar accumulation
- Hormonal changes (e.g. pregnancy, menopause)
- Smoking and tobacco use
- Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism)
- Misaligned bite or crooked teeth
- Lip or tongue piercings
