Why might I need root canal treatment?
The pulp at the centre of a tooth contains nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, repeated dental procedures or trauma allows bacteria to penetrate the pulp, the resulting infection can cause severe pain and, if left untreated, can spread to form an abscess.
Common signs that root canal treatment may be needed include:
- Severe, throbbing toothache — particularly at night
- Hot or cold sensitivity that lingers after the stimulus is removed
- Pain when biting down or touching the tooth
- Swelling of the gum or face around the affected tooth
- A darkening or discolouration of the tooth
