What causes a diastema?
Diastemas can result from a size mismatch between the jaw and the teeth, an oversized labial frenum (the band of tissue connecting your upper lip to your gums), or childhood habits such as thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting. Gum disease can also cause teeth to drift and create new gaps. As your dentist in St Albans, we always investigate the underlying cause before recommending treatment.
Gaps in baby teeth are entirely normal — the majority close naturally as the permanent teeth erupt.
